1- Many utility companies offer off-peak energy usage plans. If you are enrolled in one of these types of plans, you pay different rates for energy at certain times. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can program your heating and cooling unit to come on at certain times of the day. This ensures, that you are being charged those off-peak lower rates opposed to the higher rates from your electric company. Of course you will still use your heating and air conditioning whenever you need to feel comfortable, but it will drive down the costs by shifting the majority of the energy usage to the times of the day when your energy is the cheapest.
2- A programmable thermostat can also allow you to customize your heating and cooling to your schedule. For example, you can choose not to have your unit run as much during the times of the day that you are not home. You can set your thermostat for an hour or so before you get home to start getting to a comfortable temperature for you by the time you get there. Many programmable thermostats have four different times you can program for each day! The majority of programmable thermostats even have the ability to schedule the weekends or even each day differently.
