You Can Dust Less and Have a Healthier, Cleaner Home

Studies Reveal Every Homeowner’s Dream: You Can Dust Less and Have a Healthier, Cleaner Home Studies Show Trane CleanEffects™ Reduces Dust by Half While Helping to Prevent Allergy Symptoms and Asthma Attacks

Tyler, Texas (October 30, 2008) — New studies conducted by Environmental Health & Engineering Inc. (EH&E) and professors at the Harvard School of Public Health show that installation of Trane CleanEffects™, a whole-house air cleaner, reduces dust accumulation in the home by more than 50 percent — meaning you can dust less and have a healthier, cleaner home environment.

Household dust has been shown to be a major source of exposure to allergens such as fungi, dust mite debris, pet dander, chemical contaminants and possibly even cockroach and rodent waste. Reduced accumulation of dust in your home may lead to reduced exposure to allergens (such as fungal spores) and toxins (such as lead) present in surface dust, helping to prevent allergy symptoms and asthma attacks.

Removing dust is especially important for children because they inhale and ingest more dust than adults. This is because children breathe faster and inhale 50 percent more air per pound of body weight than adults and put their hands in their mouths, resulting in increased exposure through ingestion. In fact, children ingest anywhere from 50 mg. to 100 mg. of dust per day, which is 100 times more than adults ingest. To put it in perspective, this amounts to about a teaspoon of dust every six weeks. Inhaling and ingesting large amounts of dust puts children at increased risk to the allergens and toxins that dust may contain.

Study settles the dust question

Researchers conducted a study to evaluate potential associations between Trane CleanEffects and settled dust accumulation as well as airborne particulate matter in single-family homes over a four-month period. The study concluded that 50 percent less dust accumulated in the homes, and that airborne particulate matter levels were lower indoors when the Trane CleanEffects unit was on than when it was off.

“Considered together with the results of previous studies, the results confirm that the use of Trane CleanEffects will substantially reduce accumulation of dust indoors and indoor levels of particulate air pollution,” said Dr. David MacIntosh, instructor at the Harvard Extension School, and principal scientist at EH&E.

Trane CleanEffects utilizes patented breakthrough air cleaning technology to eliminate allergens and particles you don’t want in your home, such as dust, pollen, bacteria, pet dander, mold spores and smoke. It even removes particles as small as 0.1 microns – 1/1,000th the diameter of a human hair – the size that eludes most air cleaners. Trane CleanEffects is 100 times more effective than the standard 1-inch filter found in most home central systems, removing up to 99.98 percent of airborne particles.

“We’ve always known that Trane CleanEffects removes dust and allergens from the air, providing a cleaner, healthier environment, and through these new tests we wanted to show just how much surface dust it reduces as well,” said Mark Hagan, systems marketing manager for indoor air quality for Trane. “By removing up to 99.98 percent of particles and allergens from the filtered air and significantly reducing surface dust and the contaminants it might contain, consumers can feel reassured that they have a healthier and cleaner home.”
